Septic service in Hephzibah and southern Richmond County. Rural properties, sandy soils, and a high concentration of septic systems.
Hephzibah sits in southern Richmond County, below the Fall Line, so Coastal Plain sand and wider floodplains are typical rather than the Piedmont clay found north of Augusta. Permits go through the County Board of Health under the East Central Health District, with a 20-day decision window and a permit valid twelve months.
Most city pages on contractor websites are the same paragraph with the town name swapped in. This one isn't, because Hephzibah has things worth knowing that the next town over doesn't share.
South Richmond County sits on the Coastal Plain side of the Fall Line, so sandier and better-draining soils are common. For septic that generally means a smaller drainfield footprint than the clay lots north of Augusta and fewer alternative designs.
The trade-off with sandy Coastal Plain ground is the water table. South Carolina and Georgia both require vertical separation from the seasonal high water table, and on low-lying parcels near floodplains that separation is what a site evaluation fails on. Where that happens, elevated or mounded designs are the usual answer.
Southern Richmond County is rural, which means a high proportion of properties are on septic rather than sewer, and a lot of those systems have been in the ground a long time with no surviving records. Georgia county health departments hold permit records and we can retrieve them.
If you've dealt with septic on the South Carolina side, remember the differences here: permits come from the county rather than the state, the permit is good for twelve months rather than five years, the county has twenty days to decide, and a county inspection before backfill is mandatory on every job. There is no self-inspection option in Georgia.
