Septic service in Edgefield, SC

Septic installation, pumping and repair in Edgefield and Edgefield County. Rural acreage, Piedmont clay, and permits handled through SCDES.

Edgefield at a glance

Edgefield County sits above the Fall Line in the Piedmont, which means clay soils, narrow stream valleys and larger drainfield requirements. Backhoe pits are required for site evaluation above the Fall Line. Permits go through SCDES at state level with a $150 site evaluation and remain valid five years.

What's different about septic systems in Edgefield

Most city pages on contractor websites are the same paragraph with the town name swapped in. This one isn't, because Edgefield has things worth knowing that the next town over doesn't share.

Piedmont clay, and plenty of it

Edgefield is squarely in Piedmont country: crystalline rock beneath, clay soils above, narrow stream valleys between. South Carolina classes soils with massive or platy structure, or substantial expansible clay minerals, as unsuitable for a conventional system, and SCDES states plainly that clay soils require more space.

The upside for Edgefield is acreage. Most rural property here has enough room to simply build a larger field, which is the cheapest solution to clay. Where lots are smaller or the topography is tight, engineered designs become the answer, and in South Carolina only Tier 3 installers may install Standard 610 systems.

Slope and stream valleys

Piedmont topography means slope, and slope means setbacks matter more than they do on flat ground. South Carolina requires 75 feet from surface water at mean high water and 25 feet from an upslope basement, among others. On a hillside parcel with a creek running through it, the usable area can be considerably smaller than the acreage suggests.

Buying land here? Evaluate first

SCDES is blunt that not all property is suitable for a septic system. On rural Edgefield acreage the price per acre can make a parcel look like a bargain right up until the soil evaluation comes back. Have it looked at before you close.

Edgefield septic questions

Answers specific to Edgefield County

Is Edgefield above the Fall Line?
Yes. Edgefield County sits in the Piedmont above the Fall Line, which means clay soils are typical and backhoe pits rather than hand borings are required for site evaluation.
Does clay soil mean I can't have a septic system?
Not usually. It means you need more room for the drainfield. On Edgefield's rural acreage that's often straightforward. Where lots are smaller or topography limits the usable area, an engineered design achieves the same treatment in a smaller footprint.
I'm buying rural land in Edgefield. What should I do first?
Have the soil evaluated before you close. SCDES states plainly that not all property is suitable for a septic system, and a soil evaluation is far cheaper than discovering the problem after you own it.
